Bike Uncharted Terrain

Veteran mountain bikers looking for adventure think first of Colorado, but few have yet to discover Ouray. The San Juan Mountain Range offers innumerable opportunities for cycling, as do the numerous backcountry paths in and around Ouray. From easy paths along the river to off-road mountain passes, Ouray has trails for cyclists of all levels.

Most important, Ouray is a bike-friendly town. Park your car and use your bike for the duration of your stay. There's not a spot in town that can't be reached easily on foot or by pedal. The next bike tour you plan through the mountains of Colorado, be sure to add Ouray to your itinerary.

A Few of the Biking Trails In and Around Ouray

Scenic River Road/Ouray–Ridgway (easy): 25 miles

Portland Trail (moderate): 8 miles

Dallas Creek Loop (difficult): 40 miles

Imogene Pass/Last Dollar Loop (extremely difficult): Steep terrain; allow 5 to 10 hours

 

 

 

Altitude Warning
It takes some people a few hours and others a few days to adjust to Ouray's altitude. Drink plenty of water and stay well-hydrated when participating in outdoor activities. The weather at high altitudes changes frequently, so always pack an extra layer or two, rain protection, and sunscreen.
