The Switzerland of America

Surrounded by a majestic amphitheater in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, Ouray, Colorado, sits in a river valley at 7,700 feet. More than 800 residents live is this idyllic town year-round. The population triples in the summer months when several hundreds more come to enjoy the town’s most-popular season.

Ouray was settled in 1875 as a mining town for gold and silver. It wasn't long, however, before its majestic mountains, cascading waterfalls, and natural hot springs drew tourists from across the country.

Ouray is named for the famous chief of the Tabeguache Ute Indians. Chief Ouray is credited with maintaining peaceful relations between settlers who came for gold and the Native Americans who revered the site for its game and hot springs. Today, Ouray remains one of Colorado's best vacation destinations.
